I Didn't Say a Thing

A recent quotation highlighted in the JWR caught my eye as good advice for all of us, certainly for those of us who tend to write and comment on the various online sites and social networking sites. And it definitely applies to writing in the "outside" world as well.

"Often the best thing about not saying anything is that it can't be repeated." --- Suzan Wiener

Certainly what has not been said cannot come back to bite you. Perhaps one reason why some consider silence as golden.

Not saying something doesn't always stop people from thinking or saying that you did say something.

Someone once started arguing with me about something I said that was reported to them. I was not present at the time and place where I supposedly said that thing. I asked the person why they would assume that I said such a thing. They sort of shrugged and said that it sounded like something I would have said so they didn't question the statement.

Even not saying something can come back to bite you.

I'm with you leahle. I've lost track of how many times someone has told me I said something that I know I didn't say. But if you tell those people that you didn't say it they don't always believe you either. You lose either way.
