The Best Present

With Chanukah coming out early this year a lot of people are already busy shopping for presents. Toy stores are overflowing with wares. Shopping carts are being piled sky high. But I'd like to recommend a different type of gift, one that is great for both the giver and the receiver--books. Why? Let me repeat a posting from a few years ago for the answer to that.

On True Wealth for Children

You may have tangible wealth untold;

Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.

Richer than I you can never be—

I had a mother who read to me.

That's wonderful.
Thanks for sharing.

I'm a big proponent for "Chapter A Night" before bed reading, even for older children who can read for themselves. There's nothing like parental quality time. My personal recommendation to get started with this with slightly older children is The Westing Game.

the westing game is a great book. btw, when reading to older children, try to choose a book that is slightly above their reading level.

I have fond memories of my mom reading me a chapter a night of To Kill A Mockingbird when I was in 5th grade. I still remember the discussions we had when recapping from one night to the next. My mom's youngest is still in elementary and I she's still doing it- I think right now they're doing Tuck Everlasting.
