Hurray for Teaneck!

Thanks to my daughter for forwarding the following to me from the Teaneck Digest. Orthonomics brought up the issue of family size recently. In addition, the tuition crisis has been the topic of conversation for quite some time. One of the complaints I've heard is that none of the Rabbonim are actively addressing these issues. Not the case any longer. If you are interested in both or either topic then you might want to take a little drive out to Teaneck in March.

I'd like to see a program like this happen in Brooklyn---not going to happen. But good for Teaneck for allowing the subject to come up in public.

"not going to happen"

why are you so cynical? of course it could happen in brooklyn. you just won't like the what will be said here.

Lion, I'm not being cynical, just realistic. There are too many big names and big named institutions in Brooklyn all in competition with each other. Which one is going to be brave enough to be the first? Being first puts you in a funny position. The others may agree with you but if they publicly say so that puts them into second place because you made the public statement first. These institutions don't like being in second place or third place etc. So what are their choices? They ignore what you have said or they disagree that you said it publicly or they come up with a differing position, putting everyone back in competition. Also, are you talking a kulah or a chumrah? If a kulah then what I've said definitely applies. If a chumrah the others may or may not join, but will do so reluctantly.

From my point of view the Brooklyn rabbis and schools are like squabbling siblings all wanting to get their mother's attention and be mommy's favorite child. They love to "tattle" on each other and they all are striving to be the number one son. Carries sibling rivalry to new heights.

Notice that it's sponsored by torahweb.org; I believe they post all their lectures online, so this will probably be accessible to all in some time. :-)

Kind of strange that so much discussion on this goes on online and then we are suddenly seeing some real world discussion. Is this life imitating art or art imitating life?
