A Word About Vinegar

Vinegar is an excellent cleaning product and a lot "purer" then the chemical cleansers available. It makes glass sparkle and degreases sink drains. It gets gook off of tile easily. It helps to release burned on food.

Just keep this in mind, however, if you use vinegar or products containing vinegar. Most vinegars sold under the plain name "vinegar" are grain based. They require a pesachdik hashgochah. To avoid problems when using vinegar in cleaning, particularly in the kitchen, buy and use pesachdik vinegar.

I wish I had read this a few weeks ago, when I threw out last year's pesadik vinegar. I only use it on Pesach, because the Pesach version is watered down (full strength apple cider vinegar is supposedly healthy). Now I'll try it for cleaning.

I tried some apple cider vinegar in my sink. Didn't seem to clean much. Maybe it needs to be white vinegar for cleaning? I suppose it's the acid that's the trigger for this.

Leora,
I only use the white vinegar--I've never tried the apple cider vinegar. I have a feeling it is not acid enough to cut the grease.

For greasy pipes: pour some vinegar down the pipe and let stand in there for a few minutes. Flush with hot tap water. If a pipe is really stuffed with grease, put one tablespoon of baking soda down into the pipe. Pour in about 1/4 c. of vinegar and watch the volcano erupt. Then flush with hot tap water. For a greasy sink, pour the vinegar on a sponge and apply over the sink. Rinse and then apply some clean vinegar again.

Heloise who has the column in many newspapers has a pamphlet available for all the things you can use vinegar for including all kinds of cleaning tips. I made a copy and keep it with my pesach lists. A useful thing to send away for.
