Words to Ponder

Putting money into perspective

"He who loses money loses much. He who loses a friend loses more. But he who loses faith loses all."

I'd like to know more about the context of the quote. Does faith mean religious faith; faith in a friend; faith in humanity in general?

A person might lose religious faith but retain faith in the goodness of humanity.

Anon,
I got the quotation from a book of famous quotes. Unfortunately, other than the author the book gives no other information about when the quote was said and under what circumstances. Trying to find more info about Haskins led to the strange fact that other than the quote attributed to him--and it's attributed on dozens of sites, I can't find out a single piece of info on the author.
