A Cut Above

Now that the three weeks are over everyone seems to be lining up to get haircuts. Someone sent me the link below and thought I might be interested in seeing just how those haircuts are handled in some areas of Klal. The link is to the Kosher Haircut Guide, and you will be happy to note that posters of the page linked to are available for public display. i am making zero comments--I'll let the page speak for itself.

Nice service they're doing for Klal. They should send this to every barbershop in Yiddishe New York.

Has there ever been a time when instead of having the long peyos and the hair short on top, orthodox men just let all of their grow long, kind of like the movie renditions of Moses and Jesus? Maybe hollywood and rennaisance (sp?) artists have gotten to me, but I can't picture men in biblical and temple time and pre-chassidic times going around with the hair cut short on top and long, curley peyos in front.

Anon,
It's generally agreed that scissors first showed up somewhere in the 3rd century BCE, in Egypt. That being the case, it would have been impossible to get hair that short using only a knife, certainly around the ear area. So I'd agree with you that hairstyles for frum men prior to that probably did not resemble what we have today.

Does this remind anyone else of the Iranian government's efforts to ban "decadent Western hairstyles"? DovBear had a post on that called "If the Hareidim ruled us." Oy.

Rabbi Forst is a real Talmid Chochom and a huge Posek. He is legit, so I wouldn't make fun of this. And for anyone with a squirmy little boy, or a neurotic adolescent, the guide is good reference material for the Mom who needs to answer, "yes it's fine- perfectly kosher."
