As I seem to be in the mood for posting summer reading lists that somehow relate to things I've written about, you might want to check out Leo Tolstoy's story "How much land does a man need." It's available at http://www.online-literature.com/tolstoy/2738/ There is a lot of discussion about wants and needs and how to determine which is which. How much is enough? The story might get some thinking flowing.
Both this story and the Asimov story I linked to before would make excellent summer reading for your older children as well. Sorry, but I am really not much of a fan of the English stories written for frum kids that proliferate today. My reasons for that are a subject for a different posting.

I had already anticipated what Tolstoy's answer was going to be to the question raised in the title but he did provide an interesting journey in getting to that answer. Just substitute "yetzer ha'rah" for the devil and you pretty much have today's climate of one-up-manship.
Oy, I also hate the books written for frum kids today. The topics are usually asinine, have little to no aspects of real life, and are generally badly written. Oh, and the pictures almost always have oversized kippahs and oversized tzitzit (does anyone really wear tzitzit that almost reach their ankles?)
