New Ban on Shidduch Dating on Super Bowl Sunday

My friend Miriam called me this morning rather upset. She had set up a young lady from the Boston area with a boy from New York. The girl was going to be in NYC this past Shabbos so it made perfect sense to Miriam to set up a date for Sunday (her first mistake).

The girl can't tell the difference between a football and a matzah ball but "her" team was playing yesterday. The boy took her to a lounge, a lounge which had set up a wide screen television so that the patrons wouldn't miss the game. And, gasp, the girl spent the evening rooting for the Patriots, while the boy was a Giants all the way fan.

This morning both the girl and the boy said no to another date. Mentioned was the unbridled enthusiasm in backing the wrong team.

Is this what we have come down to? Football teams as a deciding factor in shidduch making? Please tell me it just aint so!

A shadchan set up a date for Super Bowl Sunday? What did she expect was going to happen? Just surprised the boy said yes.

I have a close friend that's a Rangers fan and she married a Devils fanatic...their marriage is still going strong after more than 15 years. And hockey fans tend to be the most vociferous of fans.

I think the couple you wrote about made a grave error in going to that lounge for a first date. Possibly, if they'd known each other a little better this 'unbridled enthusiasm' (and I'm wincing as I write that because I can just imagine what's behind those two words) wouldn't have been quite so annoying.

Sorry but your friend was wrong. It's a practical thing. Shachanim shouldn't set up a date for Super Bowl Sunday and for sure not if a NY team is playing. It's a guy thing. You don't have to understand it you just have to work with it.

It's your perfect example profK. Men should stay out of shaitels because it's women's style and women should not presume to understand Super Bowl Sunday which is a male thing.

What Jake said. Women can't expect priveleges on their side and then not understand that men have some priveleges too.

Jake & Brian, where in Jewish thought is it written that the Super Bowl is a "male thing?" There are enough distinctions in Torah thought made between various classes of people that I think there's no need to create artificial new ones.

how about we ban football entirely? its way to violent of a sport, not unlike cock fighting. Certainly we can't risk corrupting young minds with such non-sense. :)

Personaly I would have been complaining about being ignored.

No dice.
Doesn't pass the smell test.

Even if "Mentioned was the unbridled enthusiasm in backing the wrong team.", I would imagine it was done in jest.

First of all the boy could have said no to the shadchan. Sunday he was busy. Second of all, the girl could have lightened up a little , especialy if she really didn't know anything about the game. There is usually much more to a story like this then meets the eye. It actually sounded like the perfect date. They probably loosened up enough in the guise of being interested in the game to let some of their 'real' personalities come through. Low and behold, they didn't like each other. Hey, that happens even when the Super Bowl is not invovlved! B'kiso,B'kaaso, B'koso, B'Bowlo!

Just a little note:

As was posted on the b4s blog, the excuse given to a shadchan for saying no is rarely if ever the real reason for saying no. I suppose that unbridled enthusiasm for the wrong team is as good an excuse as any.
