Another Word About Alcohol--not my words

Perhaps some of you wondered why I would make an announcement about Adar when it is barely August. Some of you may have just nodded your heads, and murmured "okay, she's ranting about alcohol yet again." Just another woman who doesn't "get it." Back at Purim time I pointedly told the mothers out there that they need to get active about this problem. The men aren't "solving" it so it's time for the women to take the lead. The following illustrates why that is going to be necessary.

SL on Orthonomics http://orthonomics.blogspot.com has the link to an editorial that appeared on the 31st in the 5 Towns Jewish Times. The editor makes a few good points and then blows away any good he possibly could have done in his last paragraph. And it's that last paragraph I'm asking you to read and weep at. What would have happened had the man's wife not have been there? Anyone want to make bets about the purchase?

Thanks for the link. I completely agree about the gender divide. That's not to say that women never get drunk, of course, but how many men in our communities feel perfectly comfortable tossing back a few too many "L'Chaim's" at a kiddush, clearly feeling a boost to their masculinity.

Most of us women aren't interested in allowing ourselves to "let it all hang out," especially in public. Why? Maybe because it's not socially acceptable, maybe because someone has to be around to steer the men out the door and back to their own homes.
