Who's Minding the Store?

My daughter sent me the following via email. It gave me a chuckle but I also sighed. Kind of makes me wonder just how our government manages to get anything done. And to think that when I was young they used to tell us that only the best and brightest went into government work.

Is it just me, or does anyone else find it amazing that during the mad cow epidemic our government could track a single cow, born in Canada almost three years ago, right to the stall where she slept in the state of Washington ? And they tracked her calves to their stalls located in other areas. But they are unable to locate 11 million illegal aliens wandering around our country. Maybe we should give each of them a cow.

That's not true. Government can track 11 million illegals. They just can't (because of liberals) round them all up and send them back.

You know, in NYC, it is illegal to question someone about their status...

Mlevin,
I did some research on the various government databases. The figure for how many illegal aliens there are in the country is simply not known. Various of the government offices ESTIMATE it at anywhere from 6.5 million all the way up to 17 million and no one has an exact figure. Those estimates could be wrong as well. The figures come from extrapolations based on certain industries which hire an abundant number of illegals, such as the agriculture industries in the south and west. Some of the figures are based on school attendance cross referenced with how many immigrants were legally allowed in referenced to children that were born at the time those immigrants were let in. Many of the estimates do not take into consideration that immigrant families tend to grow larger than "native" families do. They also look at hospital emergency room and clinic visits. When I querried one of the databases as to how many of those increased hospital visits were coming from legal residents/citizens who did not have other health care coverage and were using the hospitals in lieu of doctor visits, they couldn't give an exact figure, only a range of estimates. Illegal immigrants do not exactly stand up and say so.

Playing the name blame game and blaming things on liberals, whatever that label actually means in today's age, is diverting from the facts--we don't know how many illegal immigrants there really are, don't know where they all are and have no plan for what to do with them even if we could find them all. It was the Republican administration (whatever Republican means today) that floated the idea of clemency for the illegal immigrants and the road to citizenship open--this way they would be paying taxes just like the rest of us. It came to nothing.

What is illegal in NYC and other parts of the country as well is to ask someone on a job interview if they are a citizen of the US. You are allowed, however, to phrase the question as "would you meet the qualifications for employment in this job" when those qualifications are, by statute or actual law, citizenship or a green card. If someone answers "no," you can't give them the job. If they answer "yes" you are allowed to verify their information.
